This is an extremely dangerous practice and in the above incidents resulted in a total of 4 deaths.

As a responsible industry we have, through the introduction of the labels shown below, attempted to highlight to the users of Roll about heaters; a) the specific size of cylinder that may be used with the heater and, b) the need for the cylinder to be correctly placed inside the back of the heater and not standing on the ground next to the heater.

The use of this Safety Warning label will be incorporated into the relevant Safety Standard (SANS 1539). Although this is currently under review, the revised and updated version will not be ready for publication before the coming winter season.

We cannot risk another winter season where similar incidents could occur and without a demonstrated collective industry effort to reduce the chances of it happening. For this reason, all suppliers are urged to implement the use of the label with immediate effect.

For maximum coverage of heaters that will be solld to consumers in the coming season, the labels should be used on new stock being produced for the winter season whether locally produced or imported, as well as existing warehouse stock and unsold stock in the trade.
For maximum effectiveness the label should be affixed to the top of the heater so that it is highly visible.

The LPGSASA cannot enforce suppliers to implement this until the revised standard is published, but I'm sure that as responsible suppliers, you will want to be a part of this exercise.

Label information
1. The paper should be a glossy finish with a self adhesive backing ( e.g. peel and stick)
2. Black border dimensions 95mm x 75 mm x 2 point line thickness
3. The words 'Important Safety Warning' in Red Arial 24 point bold
4. Black text is 14 point Arial regular.
5. The words XX kg need to be changed (before printing !) to the specific cylinder size for your particular heater model(s). There are two basic type being those that use 9 kg cylinders and those that use a 6kg or 7 kg cylinder. It is important that the correct cylinder size is printed on the label otherwise the effort and cost of this exercise will be negated and lead to more questions that it resolves.
Note: The colour of the text does not need to be Red. That is only done on the above sample label to draw your attention to the fact that there is some editing for suppliers to do.
6. To assist in providing the label in a format suitable for your printer the label can be supplied upon request as a Corel Draw file (X4) This is an editable file where the printer is able to work in Corel Draw X4.
7. To further assist where your printer uses another format, the warning triangle image is pasted separately on this page and can be dropped into a label prepared using another origination format.
Should any supplier require further information on any aspect of this regarding timing or printing information please contact me directly.

Ted Parrett Safety Commissioner LPGSASA (011) 886 9702
or
Tel: (011) 476 5242
Cell: 082 420 2251

Urgent and special message for all Registered LP Gas Installers

As a result of the publication of the Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER), it has been necessary for the LPGSASA to revise the name, content and layout of the present LPGSASA Certificate of Compliance (CoC) books.

LPG Cylinder Permit holders - Re ISO 4706

You may be aware that the most common cylinder standard in use for LPG cylinders supplied into or manufactured in South Africa has been revised.

Technical Bulletin - Certificate of Conformity and change of ownership.

Certificate of Conformity for gas installations and the requirements upon change of ownership of a property where there is an existing LPGas installation.

Regulatory Information Retail Price Regulation

The Minister of Energy has under section 2 (1) (c) of the Petroleum Products Act, 1977, made the regulations set out in the schedule contained in the Gazette: Vol.541 Pretoria, 13 July 2010 No. 33379.
