These regulations set out the requirements regarding the design, manufacture, operation, repair, modification, inspection and testing of pressure equipment with a design pressure equal to or greater than 50kPa, in terms of the relevant health and safety standard incorporated into the Regulations under section 44 of the Act.
The Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER) incorporate the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) Standards and Codes of Practice relating to all Gases.

CODES OF PRACTICE - SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL STANDARDS (SANS):
SANS 10019: transportable metal containers for compressed gas- basic design, manufacture, use and maintenance
SANS 10087: The handling, storage, distribution and maintenance of liquefied petroleum gas in domestic and industrial installations
Part 1: Liquefied petroleum gas installations involving gas storage containers of individual water capacity not exceeding 500 litres and a combined water capacity not exceeding 3 000 litres per installation
Part 3: Liquefied petroleum gas installations involving storage vessels of individual water capacity exceeding 500 litres
Part 7: Filling premises for refillable liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) containers of gas capacity not exceeding 9 kg including the storage of containers not exceeding 48 kg capacity up to 1500kg

TRAINING:
The LP Gas Safety Association promotes safety in the industry and to this end presents a variety of training courses to cover all needs. As from the 1st of OCTOBER 2009 in terms of the OHS Act (PER), only Registered (authorised person) LP Gas Installers shall install and maintain LP Gas installations.
INSTALLER REGISTRATION
In order for the LP Gas industry to adhere to the law, the association has developed training courses for LP Gas Installers.
1. Domestic Installers (Basic Course)
Installers may install LP Gas equipment up to and including FOUR (4) 48 kg cylinders according to the on a manifold system and carry maintenance on equipment to

Practical : 6 months practical experience in LP Gas and 10 installations under the supervision of a registered Installer, of which 3 installations will be assessed by the LPGSASA assessor.
2. Commercial Installers (Intermediate Course)
Installers may install LP Gas equipment up to and including :
2.1 All sizes of manifolds for 48 kg cylinders and associated vaporisers and other ancillary equipment, to SANS 10087 - 1.
2.2 When the supply is a dumpy or bulk tank then the Commercial installer may install any equipment after the Low Pressure Regulator.
2.3 Filling sites operating from portable cylinders, to SANS 10087 - 7.
Practical: Must be Registered Domestic Installers. In addition to the 6 months referred to above, 10 installations under the supervision of a registered Installer is required, of which 3 installations will be assessed by the LPGSASA assessor.
3. Industrial Installers (Advanced Course)
Installers shall install all dumpy and fixed bulk tanks and associated equipment including high pressure pipe work systems in fixed plants, to SANS 10087 - 3 or on LP Gas tankers.
Practical: Must be Registered Commercial Installers and must complete 10 installations under the supervision of a registered Installer, of which 5 installations will be assessed by the LPGSASA assessor
4. Industrial Maintenance
Installers may repair / maintain any group of equipment that they have been registered to work on.
5. Auto Installers
Installers shall convert / install and maintain all LP Gas fuel powered vehicles, to SANS 10087 - 6.
Practical: 6 month's practical experience in LP Gas related mechanical activities. 3 Auto conversions are to be assessed by the LPGSASA assessor.
